As community-owned, not-for-profit organizations, Community Futures' priority is to provide funding and services that promote rural economic development. Though we endeavour to be flexible in how we apply this, we do have certain common criteria that you should know about.

Is your business located (or will it be located) in a rural area?
Community Futures loans and services are only available to businesses in rural areas - located outside of the main cities of Edmonton (this includes St Albert), Calgary, Saskatoon, and Regina.
Do you know why a business plan is important?
If you are looking for financing from almost any financial institution, you will need a business plan. A business plan provides important information about your company's management expertise and viability. If you are looking for financing from Community Futures you will need to develop a business plan. We can help you do that.
Do you know what your credit rating is?
If you are looking for financing from any financial institution, they will run a credit check on you or your incorporated company to see if you have dealt responsibly with past loans and debt. A bad credit rating is a concern to most lenders, including Community Futures. Have you tried to get financing for your business elsewhere?
If you are looking for financing for your business through Community Futures, you must contact a bank first. If you are unable to secure appropriate financing under reasonable terms elsewhere, then you may be able to get financing through Community Futures.
Do you have the resources to make a personal investment in your business?
If you are looking for financing for your business through Community Futures, you must be prepared to make a personal investment. Community Futures requires you to provide cash plus security (such as vehicles, equipment, land, buildings, etc.) to back the loan. This shows that you are committed to making your business work.
